Audi is one of the more expensive German marques to keep on the road in SA — a step above VW on most service items and roughly in line with BMW on the major drivetrain stuff. As a guide on the most-quoted items: an EA888 timing chain tensioner alone is R1,800-R2,600 aftermarket and R3,500-R4,500 OEM, a full timing chain kit (chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets) is R6,500-R9,500 aftermarket against R14,000+ OEM, a Pierburg PCV valve for the 2.0 TFSI is R950-R1,400, an electric water pump assembly (G62) for the EA888 lands between R3,800 and R5,800 aftermarket versus R7,500+ for genuine Audi, front control arms for B8 A4/A5 are R750-R1,300 each aftermarket, and a DSG DQ200 mechatronic unit (refurbished) runs R18,000-R28,000. Send your VIN and we'll quote OEM, OE-supplier and aftermarket side-by-side in ZAR before you commit.
All three. For most Audis we can source genuine Audi/VAG OEM parts, OE-supplier brands (Pierburg, Continental/VDO, Bosch, Sachs, Mahle, Hella, Febi Bilstein, Lemforder, Hengst, Hepu) and budget aftermarket equivalents. OE-supplier is usually the sweet spot — the same factory that produces the original VAG-boxed part is selling it in their own box at 30-45% below OEM list. For wear items, gaskets, sensors, water pumps, ignition coils and filtration that's our default recommendation. For mechatronic units, DSG components, quattro driveline parts and Haldex couplings we'll typically flag OEM or known-good refurbished as the safer route.
Stocked items inside Johannesburg usually go same-day or next-day via courier. OE-supplier items pulled from a second JHB supplier typically land within 1-3 working days. Less common parts — early B6/B7 A4 trim, specific S-line or RS components, or a particular mechatronic unit — can stretch to 5-10 working days while we work the SA network or wait on a European import. We'll give you an honest ETA on the quote rather than a placeholder.
On the early Gen 1 and Gen 2 EA888 (1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI, roughly 2008-2014 in SA — A3 8P/8V, A4 B8, A5, Q5) the timing chain tensioner is a known weak point. Symptoms are a dieselly rattle on cold start, sometimes a check-engine for cam/crank correlation, and in the worst case a jumped chain and bent valves. A full kit (chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets, bolts) is R6,500-R9,500 aftermarket from Febi, INA or Iwis (Iwis is the OE supplier for the chain itself) plus 8-12 hours labour at an independent specialist — total job typically R14,000-R22,000. If you bought a Gen 1/2 EA888 used and don't have history showing the tensioner was updated to the later revised part, fitting it preventatively is cheaper than rebuilding a head. Gen 3 EA888 (post-2013/2014) uses a belt-driven oil pump and a far more robust chain setup — that revision is not a concern.
The DQ200 dry-clutch 7-speed DSG fitted to 1.4 TFSI and some 1.8 TFSI Audis (mostly A3 8V and A1) has a well-documented mechatronic failure pattern — hard shifts, juddering pull-off, neutral on the move, or a P17BF / P189C-style fault. A refurbished mechatronic unit with a warranty runs R18,000-R28,000, a genuine new VAG mechatronic is R45,000-R60,000+, and labour to fit is 6-8 hours at an independent DSG specialist. We supply refurbished and new units — fitment is on your chosen workshop. The wet-clutch DQ250 6-speed in the 2.0 TFSI/TDI is a different gearbox and far more durable. S-tronic on the earlier Q5 (DL501 7-speed) has its own mechatronic and clutch-pack issues — that's a separate quote, typically R22,000-R35,000 refurbished.
Yes — the B7 (2005-2008) and B8 (2008-2016) A4 had big fleet and executive volume in SA so the aftermarket is deep. Engine, cooling, suspension, brakes, sensors, gaskets and electrics are all stocked locally through OE-supplier brands. The most-quoted B8 items are the transmission cooler (a known leak point on the multitronic and S-tronic), front lower control arms, the EA888 water pump and thermostat housing, and PCV valve. B7 owners come to us for the 2.0 TFSI fuel pump cam follower, BPG/BWE timing chain components, and rear suspension bushes. Body panels, interior trim and S-line specific bits sometimes come through breakers — send the VIN and we'll tell you whether it's a quick local pull or a longer hunt.
