Chevrolet Captiva Parts — Common Faults & SA Pricing
The Chevrolet Captiva is a mid-size SUV that sold in solid numbers in South Africa between 2007 and the General Motors exit in 2017, which means there is still a substantial rolling fleet on Johannesburg roads — mostly the 2.4 LE9 petrol, the 3.2 LP1 V6 petrol on early high-spec units, and the popular 2.0 LP9 VCDi turbodiesel. Because GM walked away from SA and Isuzu Motors SA only services later commercial product, Captiva owners no longer have a franchise dealer to phone — which is why we deal in this model every working day. Most surviving units sit between 180 000 km and 320 000 km on the clock, and the parts conversation has moved firmly into the aftermarket and used-original space.
The good news for buyers is the Captiva shares plenty of mechanical DNA with the Opel Antara (same platform, same drivetrains) and the GM Family-2 engine architecture overlaps with Opel and Holden parts catalogues — so cross-referenced aftermarket coverage is better than people expect. The bad news is the LP1 V6 timing chain job and the LP9 diesel turbo actuator are both expensive when they let go, and the GM 6L45/6L50 6-speed auto is unforgiving if the fluid was never changed. We supply aftermarket, pattern-OEM and used original parts across all three engines and both transmissions, ship countrywide from Joburg, and give you the OEM-vs-aftermarket pricing split up front. We are an aftermarket supplier — not authorised by Chevrolet, not a workshop. We sell parts; your fitment centre fits.
3.2 LP1 V6 timing chain stretch on higher-mileage units
The 3.2 LP1 V6 in the early Captiva LT shares its timing chain architecture with the Alloytec family fitted to Holden and several Cadillac variants — and it has the same well-known chain stretch problem from around 160 000 km, especially on units run hard on the wrong oil. Symptoms are a diesel-like rattle on cold start that lingers longer than it should, a P0008, P0016 or P0017 cam/crank correlation code, and eventually rough running. Ignored, the chain jumps a tooth and bends valves. A full aftermarket timing chain kit (primary and secondary chains, tensioners, guides, sprockets) is R4,800 to R7,500; genuine GM is around R12,000 and harder to source. Fitment is a 12-14 hour engine-out-the-top job — please do not attempt this at home. We sell the kit over the counter and can recommend independents who have done it before.
LP9 2.0 diesel turbo actuator failure
The 2.0 LP9 VCDi turbodiesel Captiva is the volume seller, and the most common high-ticket failure is the electronic turbo actuator (also called the VNT or vane position motor) sticking or burning out. Symptoms are limp-mode under load, a P0299 underboost code or P2563 turbo position sensor code, and sometimes a whistle that changes pitch. The actuator is a Hella/Mitsubishi unit and a genuine GM replacement is around R11,000-R14,000 — aftermarket replacement actuators run R4,500 to R6,500, and a good used original turbo with working actuator is R5,500-R8,500. Fitment is 2-3 hours. Always check the EGR cooler at the same time; soot blowback kills actuators that have just been replaced.
Water pump and EGR cooler — bread-and-butter wear
The water pump on all three Captiva engines typically calls it a day between 130 000 and 180 000 km — bearing whine, coolant weep from the timing cover, or a puddle on the driveway. Aftermarket water pump R850 to R1,600 across the 2.4 LE9, 3.2 LP1 and 2.0 LP9 (different part numbers, similar money) — we stock GMB, SKF and Gates. Always replace the thermostat (R280-R450) and drive belt at the same time. The other recurring failure on the LP9 diesel is the EGR cooler — carbon-clogged from short city trips, eventually it cracks internally and dumps coolant into the intake. Aftermarket EGR cooler R2,800-R4,200, EGR valve itself R1,800-R2,800. If you only run short trips, factor an EGR clean into every second service.
GM 6L45/6L50 automatic — ATF cooler leak and service neglect
The automatic Captivas use the GM 6L45 or 6L50 six-speed, the same family fitted to several BMW and Cadillac models. Two recurring problems land them on our books. First, the ATF cooler line (the metal-and-rubber pipe between the transmission and the radiator-mounted cooler) corrodes at the crimped joint and leaks red fluid onto the driveway — aftermarket cooler line R650-R1,200, integrated radiator-cooler R2,800-R4,500 if the cooler itself has gone. Second, GM specified the ATF as "lifetime" but it is not — owners who never changed the fluid get harsh shifting, slipping and eventually a R35,000 rebuild around 220 000 km. We sell the correct Dexron VI ATF (do not use Dexron III — wrong friction) at R180-R240 a litre; full service uses 7-9 litres plus a filter and pan gasket kit at R450-R750.
Front lower arm bushes and suspension wear
JHB potholes are merciless on the Captiva front end, and the most common suspension complaint is front lower control arm bush failure — usually the rear bush of the arm tears first, giving you a knocking sound over bumps, vague steering and uneven front tyre wear. You have two routes: replace the rubber bush only at R650 to R1,200 each (cheaper, requires a press) or replace the entire lower arm at R1,800 to R2,800 per side aftermarket which is the route most workshops take because it is faster. While the arm is out, budget for front shocks (R1,400-R2,200 each aftermarket) and anti-roll bar links (R280-R450 each) — they almost always need doing at the same mileage. Wheel alignment is non-negotiable after the work.
Chevrolet Captiva — Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a Chevrolet Captiva water pump?
Aftermarket water pumps for the Captiva run R850 to R1,600 depending on engine — the 2.4 LE9 petrol, 3.2 LP1 V6 and 2.0 LP9 VCDi diesel all use different pumps but similar price brackets. We stock GMB, SKF and Gates pattern-OEM units. Genuine GM/ACDelco is R2,400-R3,800 and increasingly hard to source since the 2017 GM exit. Always replace the thermostat (R280-R450) and drive belt at the same time — labour to get back in there is the same.
Is the 3.2 V6 timing chain job really that expensive?
Yes, and we will not pretend otherwise. The 3.2 LP1 V6 in early Captiva LT units shares timing chain architecture with the GM Alloytec family — a full aftermarket chain kit (primary chain, secondary chains, tensioners, guides, sprockets) is R4,800 to R7,500 in parts. Labour at an independent that knows the engine is typically 12-14 hours, so factor R8,000-R12,000 on top depending on the workshop rate. We sell the kit over the counter; ask us for an independent referral if you do not already have someone who has done one.
Do Opel Antara parts fit a Chevrolet Captiva?
Most mechanical parts, yes — the Captiva and Antara share the GM Theta platform, the same 2.4 LE9 petrol, 2.4/3.2 V6s and 2.0 LP9 diesel, and the same 6L45/6L50 auto. Engine internals, water pumps, turbos, suspension arms, brake components and most service items cross-reference directly. Body panels, lights and interior trim differ. When you phone us we ask for your VIN and engine code so we cross-check both catalogues before quoting — avoids the wrong-part return.
Are you a Chevrolet dealer or workshop?
No. We are an independent aftermarket parts supplier — we are not authorised by Chevrolet, General Motors or Isuzu Motors SA, and we do not run a workshop. We sell parts across the counter and ship countrywide. Your own mechanic or fitment centre does the fitting. Since GM pulled out of SA in 2017 there is no Chevrolet dealer network for the Captiva anyway, so aftermarket and good used-original parts are the only realistic route for owners now.
My Captiva is in limp mode and throwing P0299 — what is it?
On the 2.0 LP9 diesel Captiva, a P0299 underboost code together with limp-mode under load is almost always the turbo electronic actuator (also called the VNT actuator) sticking or failing. Sometimes it is a stuck vane that a workshop can free with a clean; more often the electronic motor inside the actuator has died. Aftermarket replacement actuator is R4,500 to R6,500; a good used original turbo with working actuator is R5,500 to R8,500. Get the EGR cooler checked at the same time — soot is what kills actuators in the first place.
Do you ship outside Johannesburg?
Yes — we courier countrywide. JHB and PTA metro is usually same-day or next-day, Cape Town and Durban 2-3 working days, smaller centres 3-5 days. Heavy items (turbos, gearboxes, transfer cases) ship via overnight road freight. Payment is EFT or card before dispatch; we send a tracking number once the courier collects.
