Chrysler 300C Parts — Common Faults & SA Pricing
The Chrysler 300C is the full-size luxury executive sedan that put American attitude on Johannesburg roads — sold here from 2005 through to the early 2010s in three very different drivetrains: the 5.7 Hemi V8 petrol, the 3.5 V6 petrol, and the 3.0 CRD V6 turbodiesel which is actually the Mercedes-Benz OM642 engine fitted under licence during the DaimlerChrysler era. There is also the cult SRT8 6.1 Hemi with its own enthusiast following. Most 300Cs we deal with sit between 180 000 km and 350 000 km, and since Chrysler SA wound down its franchise network the parts conversation has moved firmly into the aftermarket, pattern-OEM and good-used-original space — which is exactly where we live.
The 300C shares its LX platform and rear suspension geometry with the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and Jeep Grand Cherokee WK, and the 5.7 Hemi V8 cross-references with thousands of US-market parts catalogues — so aftermarket coverage on engine, suspension and brake components is genuinely good. The OM642 diesel is even better because it is a Mercedes engine: turbo, EGR cooler, injectors and DPF parts cross-reference straight to ML, R-Class and E-Class catalogues. We supply aftermarket, pattern-OEM and used original parts across all four engines and both the NAG1 5-speed auto and the later W5A580, ship countrywide from Joburg, and quote you the OEM-vs-aftermarket split up front. We are an aftermarket supplier — not authorised by Chrysler, not a workshop. We sell parts; your fitment centre fits.
5.7 Hemi tick — MDS lifter failure
The famous Hemi tick on the 5.7 V8 300C is real and it is almost always the MDS (Multi-Displacement System) lifters collapsing — the cylinder deactivation hardware that drops the V8 into four-cylinder mode on light load. Symptoms start as a top-end tap on cold start that gets louder, then a constant sewing-machine tick at idle, often with a P3400-P3499 code or a misfire on a deactivated cylinder. Left alone the lifter eventually wipes the cam lobe and turns a R10k job into a R45k engine job. A full aftermarket MDS lifter set with new tray and bolts runs R6,500 to R12,000 depending on brand (Hylift, Comp Cams, OE Mopar), and the job is labour-heavy — intake off, rockers off, lifters out — typically 8-12 hours at an independent. Many owners delete the MDS at the same time with a tune to stop the problem recurring.
Water pump, valve cover gaskets and Hemi top-end weeps
Bread-and-butter wear on both Hemi V8s and the 3.5 V6 is the water pump — bearing whine, weep from the timing cover, or a steady drip onto the front cross-member usually appears between 140 000 and 200 000 km. Aftermarket water pump R1,400 to R2,800 across the 5.7 Hemi, 6.1 SRT8 and 3.5 V6 (different part numbers, similar money), genuine Mopar R3,400-R4,800. The other recurring complaint is valve cover gasket seepage — oil pooling around the spark plug tubes on the Hemi, eventually fouling coil packs (R450-R850 each aftermarket). Valve cover gasket set is R650 to R1,400, plug tube seals included on the better aftermarket kits. Do both banks together — labour to get back in there is the same.
NAG1 5-speed ATF cooler leak and service neglect
The NAG1 5-speed automatic (Mercedes 722.6 in DaimlerChrysler clothing) is genuinely durable if you service it — and a R40,000 problem if you do not. Two failures dominate. First, the ATF cooler line between the gearbox and the radiator-mounted cooler corrodes at the crimp and leaks red fluid onto the driveway — aftermarket cooler line R850 to R1,800, integrated radiator-cooler R3,200-R5,500 if the cooler itself has gone. Second, Chrysler marketed the ATF as lifetime fill but the reality is 80 000 km intervals. Neglected boxes get harsh 2-3 shifts, slipping and torque-converter shudder. We sell the correct Shell ATF 134 spec (MB 236.14) at R220-R320 a litre — never substitute Dexron, the friction is wrong. Full service uses 7-9 litres plus filter, pan gasket and conductor plate adapter — total kit R1,800-R3,200.
3.0 CRD diesel — OM642 turbo, EGR cooler and oil cooler
The 3.0 CRD 300C is the Mercedes OM642 V6 turbodiesel, and it carries every well-known OM642 problem with it. Three recurring failures: the turbo electronic actuator sticks or burns out giving you limp-mode and a P0299/P2563 code — aftermarket actuator R4,800-R7,500, replacement turbo R12,000-R22,000 depending on whether you go new aftermarket, recon or good used original. The EGR cooler carbons up and eventually cracks internally, dumping coolant into the intake — aftermarket EGR cooler R3,800-R6,500, EGR valve itself R2,400-R4,200. The infamous plastic oil cooler seal in the V of the engine fails and dumps oil into the coolant or vice versa — seal kit R450-R950, but labour is 6-8 hours because the intake has to come off. DPF and injector concerns are the same as any OM642.
Suspension bushes, AC compressor clutch and LX brakes
The LX platform is heavy and JHB potholes are unforgiving — front lower control arm bushes, upper ball joints and rear lateral link bushes are the recurring suspension complaints. Bush only R450-R950 per side (press job), complete lower arm R1,800-R3,200 aftermarket. Front shocks R1,600-R2,800 each, rear R1,400-R2,400. The AC compressor clutch assembly fails on its own well before the compressor itself — clutch coil and pulley kit aftermarket R1,400-R2,800 rather than a full R6,500-R11,000 compressor swap. Brakes: standard 300C front pads R650-R1,400 a set, front discs R850-R1,600 each — but the SRT8 runs the larger Brembo setup so SRT8 front pads jump to R1,800-R3,800 a set and front discs R2,400-R4,500 each. Worth confirming SRT8 vs standard before quoting.
Chrysler 300C — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Hemi tick and how much does it cost to fix?
The Hemi tick on the 5.7 V8 300C is almost always MDS (Multi-Displacement System) lifter failure — the cylinder deactivation lifters collapse and tick on cold start, then constantly at idle. A full aftermarket MDS lifter set with tray and bolts is R6,500 to R12,000 in parts depending on brand (Hylift, Comp Cams, OE Mopar). Labour is the killer at 8-12 hours typically, so budget another R6,000-R10,000 at an independent rate. Many owners delete MDS with a tune at the same time so it cannot recur. Ignore the tick and the cam lobe gets wiped — that is a R45,000 engine job, so do not put it off.
Is the 3.0 CRD diesel the same as a Mercedes engine?
Yes — the 3.0 CRD in the 300C is the Mercedes-Benz OM642 V6 turbodiesel, built under the DaimlerChrysler partnership era. That is actually good news for parts: turbo, EGR cooler, EGR valve, oil cooler seals, injectors, DPF components and most service items cross-reference straight to Mercedes ML 320 CDI, R-Class 320 CDI and E-Class 320 CDI catalogues. Aftermarket coverage is excellent and we cross-check both Chrysler and Mercedes part numbers before quoting. The well-known OM642 weak points — turbo actuator, EGR cooler, plastic oil cooler seals — apply to your 300C identically.
Do you stock SRT8 specific parts?
We do — there is a healthy SRT8 enthusiast scene in Joburg and we deal with it regularly. The 6.1 Hemi shares most service items with the 5.7 (water pump, valve cover gaskets, plugs, coils) but the Brembo brake setup is unique to SRT8 and the brake numbers jump significantly: front pads R1,800-R3,800 a set, front discs R2,400-R4,500 each. Suspension is also stiffer-rated. Always tell us upfront when you phone in that it is an SRT8 — different part numbers, different prices, and we do not want to send standard 300C parts to an SRT8 owner.
How much is a Chrysler 300C water pump?
Aftermarket water pumps for the 300C run R1,400 to R2,800 depending on engine — the 5.7 Hemi, 6.1 SRT8 Hemi and 3.5 V6 use different pumps but similar money. Genuine Mopar is R3,400-R4,800. On the 3.0 CRD diesel you are buying a Mercedes OM642 pump and aftermarket is R2,200-R3,800. We stock GMB, Gates and Airtex pattern-OEM units. Always do the thermostat (R350-R650) and drive belt at the same time because labour to get back in there is the same.
Are you a Chrysler dealer or a workshop?
No. We are an independent aftermarket parts supplier — we are not authorised by Chrysler, Stellantis or the former Chrysler SA franchise network, and we do not run a workshop. We sell parts across the counter and ship countrywide. Your own mechanic or fitment centre does the fitting. The official Chrysler dealer footprint in SA has shrunk dramatically since the DaimlerChrysler era ended, which is why aftermarket and good used-original parts are the realistic route for most 300C owners now.
Do you ship outside Johannesburg?
Yes — we courier countrywide. JHB and PTA metro is usually same-day or next-day, Cape Town and Durban 2-3 working days, smaller centres 3-5 days. Heavy items (gearboxes, complete engines, turbos, SRT8 brake kits) ship via overnight road freight on pallet. Payment is EFT or card before dispatch; we send a tracking number once the courier collects.
