Dodge Journey Parts — Common Faults & SA Pricing
The Dodge Journey is a 7-seater family crossover that Chrysler Group SA sold from around 2008 right through to the Stellantis-era discontinuation, and it found its home with growing families who wanted three rows of seating without paying Volvo XC90 or Discovery money. Locally the Journey came in two main engine flavours — the 2.4 World Engine four-cylinder petrol on entry-spec units, and the popular 3.6 Pentastar V6 on higher trims — both paired to either a 4-speed or later 6-speed automatic depending on production year. Most surviving JHB units now sit between 140 000 km and 280 000 km, and because Dodge is no longer a live retail brand in South Africa under Stellantis, owners have effectively two parts channels left: the Stellantis-dealer network (which still carries some Chrysler/Jeep cross-reference stock) and the aftermarket and breaker route, which is where we operate every day.
The good news is that the 3.6 Pentastar V6 is one of the most widely produced engines on the planet — fitted to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler JK/JL, Chrysler 300C and a long list of US-market platforms — so aftermarket parts coverage for the V6 Journey is genuinely strong, and Jeep Pentastar parts cross-reference almost completely. The 2.4 World Engine shares architecture with the Jeep Compass, Patriot, and Dodge Caliber, so consumables and most mechanical parts are obtainable too. The trouble spots are the early 41TES 4-speed automatic, model-specific body trim, the 7-seater interior bits, and some specialist electronics that run a 5 to 10 working day lead time when we have to source through breaker networks. We supply aftermarket, pattern-OEM and used original parts, ship countrywide from Joburg, and quote the OEM-vs-aftermarket split up front so you can choose. We are an aftermarket supplier — not authorised Dodge dealer, not a workshop. We sell parts; your fitment centre fits.
3.6 Pentastar V6 oil cooler O-ring leak — the classic Pentastar job
This is the single most common Pentastar V6 fault and it lands Journey owners on our books almost weekly. The oil cooler housing sits in the valley between the cylinder banks, under the intake manifold, and the plastic housing and rubber O-rings degrade with heat cycling — typically between 120 000 km and 180 000 km. Symptoms are oil dripping down the back of the engine, oil mixed into coolant, or coolant smelling burnt. An aftermarket oil cooler kit (housing, gaskets, O-rings, thermostat) is R650 to R950 — the parts are not the expensive bit. The bill comes from labour: the intake manifold must come off, and most workshops charge around R3,200 in labour for the job, sometimes more. Genuine Mopar oil cooler kit is around R1,800-R2,400 and not always faster to source. Do not skip the thermostat — it is in the same housing.
41TES 4-speed automatic — torque converter shudder and ATF cooler trouble
Early 2.4-litre Journey units fitted with the 41TES 4-speed automatic are the headache of the range. Two recurring failures land them here. First, the torque converter shudder — a vibration through the floor at light throttle around 60-90 km/h that owners often mistake for a wheel balance or driveshaft problem. It is the lock-up clutch in the converter glazing, and the fix is either an ATF and friction-modifier service (R2,400-R3,200 in parts, sometimes solves it for 20 000-40 000 km) or a torque converter replacement at R3,800 to R6,500 aftermarket plus 6-8 hours labour. Second, the ATF cooler lines running to the radiator-mounted cooler corrode at the crimped joints and weep red fluid — aftermarket cooler lines R650-R1,200, integrated cooler if it has cracked R2,400-R3,800. Use the correct ATF+4 fluid (R190-R260 per litre); Dexron is the wrong friction profile and will make the shudder worse.
Water pump weep and thermostat housing leak
Both the 2.4 World Engine and the 3.6 Pentastar V6 develop the same bread-and-butter cooling complaint between 130 000 and 180 000 km — the water pump bearing starts to weep coolant, and the plastic thermostat housing on the Pentastar cracks at the inlet neck. Aftermarket water pump for the 3.6 V6 is R950 to R1,400, the 2.4 World Engine pump is R850 to R1,300 — we stock GMB, Gates and Airtex pattern-OEM. The Pentastar plastic thermostat housing is R650 to R1,100 aftermarket and we strongly recommend replacing it whenever the pump comes off — it is around the corner and the labour overlap is 80%. Always replace the drive belt (R280-R450) and a fresh fill of the correct MS-12106 / OAT orange coolant at the same time. Do not mix coolant colours on these engines.
Ignition coils, brake squeal and AC compressor clutch — the everyday wear items
A handful of recurring smaller failures that come up on almost every Journey over 140 000 km. Ignition coils on the 3.6 Pentastar fail one or two at a time — symptoms are a misfire under load and a cylinder-specific P0301-P0306 code. Aftermarket coil-on-plug is R280 to R480 each, and most workshops will recommend replacing all six (R1,680-R2,880 for the set) once you are past 180 000 km. Front brake squeal and pad glazing is chronic on the Journey — the OEM-spec pads are noisy when worn or contaminated, and replacement aftermarket front pads run R420 to R780 a pair, front discs R750 to R1,200 each. The AC compressor clutch burns out from JHB summer use — symptoms are no cold air and a clicking from the front of the engine when AC is selected. Replacement clutch and bearing kit aftermarket is R1,400 to R2,200; a full reconditioned compressor is R3,800 to R5,800.
Body panels, headlights and interior trim — the supply-chain pain point
This is where the discontinued-brand status bites. Body panels (fenders, bonnet, tailgate, bumpers), headlight and taillight assemblies, third-row seat parts, and Journey-specific interior trim are not held on the shelf locally in any volume. We source through the Stellantis-dealer network where stock still exists, or pull from accident-damage breaker stock — lead times typically run 5 to 10 working days, occasionally longer for trim items. Aftermarket headlight assembly is R2,800 to R4,500; a front bumper bare is R2,200 to R3,400; a front fender R1,600 to R2,600. Used originals off donor vehicles, when available, sit at roughly 55-70% of those numbers but condition varies. Always send VIN plus clear photos when requesting a quote — it speeds the sourcing and avoids the wrong-year part landing. We will tell you upfront if a part is going to take time rather than waste yours.
Dodge Journey — Frequently Asked Questions
Do Jeep parts fit a Dodge Journey?
For the 3.6 Pentastar V6, mostly yes — the same engine is fitted to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler JK/JL and Chrysler 300C, so oil cooler kits, water pumps, thermostats, ignition coils, sensors and most service items cross-reference directly. The 2.4 World Engine shares parts with the Jeep Compass and Patriot. Body panels, lights, interior trim and Journey-specific bits do not cross. When you phone we ask for the VIN and engine code so we cross-check both Dodge and Jeep catalogues before quoting — it widens our sourcing options and often gets you the part faster.
How much is the 3.6 Pentastar oil cooler job on a Journey?
Parts are cheap, labour is the bill. Aftermarket oil cooler kit (housing, gaskets, O-rings and thermostat) is R650 to R950 — we stock Dorman, Mopar-equivalent and OEM-spec pattern brands. Genuine Mopar kit runs R1,800-R2,400. The reason the job feels expensive is the intake manifold has to come off to reach the cooler, which sits in the valley between the cylinder banks — most independent workshops charge around R3,200 in labour. Always replace the thermostat at the same time (it is in the housing) and a fresh coolant fill — total job typically lands at R4,500-R5,500 all-in.
My Journey has a vibration around 70 km/h — wheels or transmission?
On the 4-speed 41TES auto Journey, a vibration under light throttle around 60-90 km/h that goes away when you brush the brake pedal is almost always torque converter shudder — the lock-up clutch is glazing. Have a workshop run a transmission scan and check ATF condition before assuming wheels or driveshafts. Sometimes a full ATF and friction-modifier service (R2,400-R3,200 parts) clears it for another 20 000-40 000 km; if not, you are looking at a torque converter at R3,800-R6,500 aftermarket plus labour. Use ATF+4 fluid only — Dexron makes the shudder worse.
Are you a Dodge dealer or workshop?
No. We are an independent aftermarket parts supplier — not authorised by Dodge, Chrysler or Stellantis SA, and we do not run a workshop. We sell parts across the counter and ship countrywide. Your own mechanic or fitment centre does the fitting. Since Dodge effectively exited the SA retail market under Stellantis, the only realistic routes for Journey owners are the limited Stellantis-dealer stock channel and the aftermarket and breaker channel where we operate. We will tell you when the dealer route is the better call rather than overpromise.
Can you supply a used 3.6 Pentastar engine for a Journey?
Sometimes, depending on breaker stock — and the cross-shop with Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Chrysler 300C donor stock genuinely helps here. Used 3.6 Pentastar engines move through the SA market in low-to-medium volume — we typically source through partner yards within 5-10 working days. Bare used engines with intake, exhaust manifold and accessories run roughly R28,000 to R48,000 depending on recorded mileage, compression test result and country of origin. We supply with a basic 30-day fitment warranty against major mechanical failure — full terms are quoted in writing on the invoice before payment. If we cannot source one, we will say so rather than waste your time.
Do you ship outside Johannesburg?
Yes — we courier countrywide. JHB and PTA metro is usually same-day or next-day, Cape Town and Durban 2-3 working days, smaller centres 3-5 days. Heavy items (engines, transmissions, complete turbos) ship via overnight road freight. Specialist Journey-specific items on a 5-10 day sourcing lead time get dispatched once they land with us. Payment is EFT or card before dispatch; we send a tracking number once the courier collects.
