Fiat Uno Parts — Common Faults & SA Pricing
The Fiat Uno is one of the most recognisable budget hatches ever sold in South Africa. Built locally and later imported from Brazil, the Uno powered a generation of first-time car buyers, fleet runarounds and student cars. Although Fiat pulled the Uno from the SA new-vehicle lineup years ago, the rolling fleet on Joburg roads is still huge — Pacers, Mias, Fires and the later Brazilian-built models all keep clocking kilometres. Most owners run them on a tight budget, which means parts demand is driven by repairs, not upgrades. We're an aftermarket supplier in Johannesburg — not a Fiat dealer, not a workshop. We source Uno parts daily from SA breakers, aftermarket importers and Brazilian parallel supply chains, then quote you for collection or courier.
The two engines that matter for parts are the 1.2 and 1.4 Fire (8-valve and 16-valve variants). Both share a lot of service items — timing belt kits, water pumps, alternators, starters, clutches and ignition components — which keeps replacement costs realistic. Body panels, interior trim and unique-to-Uno items like dash clusters, door cards and grille badges are where availability gets thin. We're honest about that up front: some trim parts we simply cannot source new, and you'll be relying on breaker yard stock. Send us your VIN or registration, the part you need and a quick description of the trim level, and we'll come back with what's actually available, at a real ZAR price.
1.2 / 1.4 Fire timing belt due — don't skip it
The Fire engine is an interference design — if the cambelt snaps, valves meet pistons and the head goes off for repair or replacement. Fiat's recommended interval is around 60,000-80,000km but on older Unos running second-hand belts of unknown age, we treat it as a now-job. A proper job means the belt, tensioner and water pump together because the pump runs off the same belt and replacing it later means doing the whole job twice. Aftermarket kits (Gates, Dayco, INA) run around R950-R1,800 depending on engine variant and supplier stock. We can quote the kit only, or kit plus a recommended fitter in Joburg if you're not doing it yourself.
Valve cover gasket weeping oil onto the block
Almost every high-mileage Uno we get a call on has a weeping valve cover gasket. You'll see oil dribbling down the back of the block, sometimes onto the exhaust manifold where it cooks and smells. The gasket itself is cheap — R180-R350 aftermarket — and it's a quick swap on the Fire engine, but ignore it long enough and you lose oil between services, the spark plug wells fill up and you start getting misfires from oil-soaked plug seals. We stock the gasket plus the plug well seals as a small kit. Worth doing both at the same time so you're not back in the engine bay next month.
Clutch slipping or shuddering on takeoff
Unos chew clutches, especially the city-traffic fleet cars and student runarounds that get launched from every robot. A full aftermarket clutch kit — pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing — runs R1,800-R3,200 depending on whether you go entry-level or a brand like Valeo or LUK. The flywheel is usually fine and can be skimmed rather than replaced. Fitment labour in Joburg is typically R1,500-R2,500 on top because the gearbox has to come out. If you're driving an Uno that judders at takeoff or smells like burning paper on hill starts, the clutch is on its way out — get it quoted before the friction plate strips and damages the pressure plate.
Alternator and starter motor failures on older units
Original Bosch and Magneti Marelli alternators on the Uno are getting old. We see two common failures — brushes worn out (cheap fix if you can find the brush set) and full bearing collapse where the unit needs replacement or rebuild. A rebuilt aftermarket alternator runs around R1,400-R2,200 exchange, and new aftermarket units sit around R1,800-R2,800. Starter motors are similar — solenoid contacts burn out first, then the brushes. Aftermarket starters are R1,200-R2,000. Both items we can source same-day from Joburg suppliers most of the time, sometimes next-day if it's a less common variant.
Suspension bushes, shocks and front-end clunks
SA roads are not kind to Uno suspension. The common call we get is a clunk over speed humps or a knock when turning — usually control arm bushes, anti-roll bar links or tired front shocks. A pair of front shocks (aftermarket Monroe, KYB or Gabriel) runs R900-R1,800 a pair. Control arm bushes are R150-R400 each depending on type, and anti-roll bar links sit around R250-R500. We sell them as individual parts or as front-end refresh kits if you're doing the full job. Honest note — some of the rubber bushes for the very early SA-built Unos are scarce and we sometimes substitute with later Brazilian-spec equivalents that fit but aren't a 100% OEM match.
Fiat Uno — Frequently Asked Questions
Do you stock parts for both SA-built and Brazilian-built Unos?
Yes — we source from SA breaker yards for the older locally built cars (Pacer, Mia, Tempo etc.) and from aftermarket importers who run Brazil parallel supply chains for the later Fire-engined Unos. Send us your VIN and we'll match the right part to your specific build.
Can you source body panels and trim for an old Uno?
Mechanical and service parts — yes, almost always. Body panels, bumpers, headlights and interior trim — sometimes, but availability is patchy. For body and trim we lean heavily on Joburg breaker yards. Send a photo of what you need and we'll let you know honestly whether we can find it.
Are aftermarket Uno parts safe to fit?
Reputable aftermarket brands like Gates, INA, Valeo, LUK, Monroe, KYB, Bosch and Magneti Marelli are the same brands used as OEM on many cars. For service items like belts, clutches, shocks and alternators, aftermarket is a sensible choice. We're upfront when a cheaper no-name part is being offered so you can decide on quality vs price.
Do you fit the parts or just supply?
We are an aftermarket supplier — not a workshop. We don't do fitment ourselves. We can recommend independent Fiat-friendly workshops in Johannesburg who know the Uno well and will fit parts you buy from us.
How do I get a quote?
Fill in the quote form on this page with your year, model, engine (1.2 or 1.4), part needed and your VIN if you have it. We typically come back within a few working hours with a price, availability and lead time. Phone and WhatsApp also work if you prefer to talk it through.
Are you a Fiat dealer?
No. We are an independent aftermarket parts supplier based in Johannesburg. We are not affiliated with Fiat South Africa, FCA or any authorised dealership. We source parts from breakers and aftermarket distributors and sell them direct to the public and trade.
