The bulk of stock on local roads runs the GW4D20M 2.0-litre turbo diesel (120kW/400Nm in earlier units, 120kW/400Nm or 135kW/480Nm in later ZA-spec variants) paired with an 8-speed ZF automatic or 6-speed manual. A smaller pool of petrol units carries the GW4C20A 2.0-litre turbo petrol. Body styles split between Single Cab (workhorse, harder to find) and Double Cab (the volume seller). GW4D20M timing chain stretch — replacement procedure and parts kit
The 2.0 diesel timing chain typically starts rattling on cold start between 80,000-140,000km, earlier on units run on short trips or stretched service intervals. Ignoring it risks the chain jumping a tooth — bent valves, scrap head. Full kit aftermarket (chain, primary + secondary tensioners, top and bottom guides, oil pump chain, sprockets if worn) lands at R3,800-R6,500 depending on supplier and whether sprockets are included. OEM-equivalent Korean/Chinese kits from established aftermarket brands sit at the lower end; genuine GWM is R9,000-R12,000 for the same parts. The job is engine-out on most workshops because the chain is at the rear of the block (gearbox-end timing) — budget 12-16 labour hours. Always replace the tensioner — it's hydraulic and the bore wears. We supply the kit; the workshop fits it.
EGR cooler clogging, EGR delete debate, and DPF options
The GW4D20M EGR cooler chokes with carbon and soot from 60,000km onwards, more aggressive on short-trip vehicles. Symptoms: rough idle, limp mode, white smoke under load, P0401/P0402 codes. New aftermarket EGR cooler is R2,800-R4,200; EGR valve assembly R1,400-R2,100. EGR delete kits (blanking plate + remap) are sold widely at R900-R1,800 for the hardware — legally grey, voids what's left of warranty, and the remap must disable the DPF regen logic or you'll throw codes constantly. The intercooler pipework runs reinforced rubber boots at three joins between intercooler, turbo outlet, and inlet manifold. Front fender (wing) aftermarket steel is R1,200-R2,100; front bumper skin (unpainted) R1,800-R3,400 Double Cab, slightly cheaper Single Cab; bonnet R2,400-R4,200. Headlamp housing (the LED-projector unit on facelift) is the painful one — R3,800-R6,800 aftermarket, R11,000+ genuine, and the wiring connector pinout changed in 2023 so always send a photo of the existing plug. Grille R650-R1,400. Where we still struggle: BCM (body control module) R4,200-R7,500 salvage-only, instrument cluster R3,800-R6,500 salvage with mileage correction needed, infotainment head unit OEM-only and frequently back-ordered.
