Haval H2 Parts — Common Faults & SA Pricing
The Haval H2 sold in South Africa between 2017 and 2020 was locally assembled and ran the Great Wall GW4G15B 1.5T turbo petrol, mated to either a 6-speed manual or the Getrag 6AT. From a parts-trade angle the H2 is a workable car — most of the wear items have aftermarket equivalents at sensible money — but the catch is that Haval dealer parts pricing inside SA carries a heavy premium, and the dealer network thinned considerably after GWM-Haval restructured the model lineup. That gap is exactly where the aftermarket comes in. We pull from Chinese OE-equivalent suppliers, generic-brand consumables, and used-take-off stock from accident vehicles, which lets us price most repair bills at 40-60% below main-agent quotes.
The trade-off with the H2 is parts identification. The 1.5T engine shares its block family with several other GWM products, but the head, turbo specification, and engine harness changed between facelifts, so a 2017 Premium will not always take the same crank sensor or ignition coil as a 2019 Luxury. When you request a quote please send the VIN and a photo of the engine compartment sticker — that gets us to the right part the first time and avoids a wrong-part return. We are an aftermarket parts supplier — not authorised by GWM-Haval and not a workshop. We sell the part; your mechanic fits it.
Timing chain stretch from 120,000 km
The GW4G15B uses a chain-driven cam setup and the chain itself, the tensioner, and the guide rails start to stretch and rattle from around 120,000 km, often earlier on cars run on cheap oil or extended service intervals. The first symptom is a cold-start rattle for 2-3 seconds before oil pressure builds, followed by a P0016 or P0017 cam/crank correlation code. A full aftermarket timing kit (chain, primary and secondary tensioners, guides, sprockets) sits at R3,200 to R4,800 depending on supplier; OE GWM kits land closer to R8,500. Replacement is a 6-8 hour workshop job. Do not just replace the tensioner on its own — once the chain is stretched the new tensioner runs out of travel inside 20,000 km.
Turbo wastegate actuator failure (P0299)
The factory turbo on the 1.5T uses an electric wastegate actuator that sticks open with age, throwing a P0299 underboost code and dropping the car into limp mode under load. Before condemning the whole turbo, get the actuator tested — a replacement electric actuator is R2,800 to R3,600 aftermarket against R6,500+ for a full turbo assembly. A complete reconditioned turbo with new CHRA runs R7,500 to R11,000 depending on supplier; brand-new aftermarket units are R14,000-R18,000. Always check the oil feed and return lines at the same time — a blocked return line will kill the new turbo inside 30,000 km, and a set of feed and return pipes is only R650-R900.
Water pump weep and thermostat housing leak
The plastic thermostat housing and the water pump weep hole are the two cooling-system weak points on the H2. The water pump typically lets go between 80,000 and 130,000 km — you will see pink coolant residue on the front of the engine block and a faint sweet smell. An aftermarket water pump is R1,100 to R1,600; the plastic thermostat housing with integrated sensor is R850 to R1,250. Replace both at the same time because the housing comes off to do the pump anyway, and pay for a fresh GWM-spec coolant top-up (the long-life red coolant — do not mix with green). Total parts bill for the job sits around R2,500-R3,200 plus 3-4 hours labour.
Oil consumption and worn piston rings
Higher-mileage H2s — typically past 140,000 km on cars that were tracked on long service intervals — develop oil consumption that ranges from a litre per 5,000 km to a litre per 1,500 km in worse cases. Root cause is glazed bores and worn oil control rings on the 1.5T pistons. A full set of OE-spec aftermarket pistons with rings runs R3,800 to R5,200; a complete engine rebuild kit (pistons, rings, main and big-end bearings, full gasket set, oil pump) sits at R8,500 to R12,000. Before committing to a rebuild, source a used complete engine — we sometimes carry 1.5T take-offs at R18,000 to R28,000 depending on mileage and condition, which often works out cheaper than a full strip-and-build.
Front lower arm bushes and AC compressor clutch
Two recurring JHB-road items. The front lower control arm bushes wear from about 60,000 km on pothole-heavy routes — you will hear a clunk over expansion joints and feel vague steering on-centre. Full lower arms with new ball joints and bushes are R1,400 to R2,100 each side aftermarket; press-in bushes alone are R380-R550 a pair but most workshops will refuse to press them and just quote the complete arm. Separately, the AC compressor clutch slips and squeals after 80,000 km, especially after the Highveld summer. A replacement clutch pulley and coil assembly is R1,800 to R2,600; a complete reconditioned compressor with new clutch is R3,200 to R4,800.
Haval H2 — Frequently Asked Questions
Do you carry Haval H2 parts in stock or is everything on order?
Mixed. Fast-moving items (water pumps, thermostats, ignition coils, brake pads and discs, front lower arms, AC compressor clutches, wastegate actuators) we usually have on the shelf in either Johannesburg or via partner yards within 24-48 hours. Slower-moving items like full timing kits, used engines and gearboxes, body panels and trim are sourced to order — typically 2-5 working days depending on the part. Send VIN with the request so we quote the right reference the first time.
Are your aftermarket parts going to last the same as GWM dealer parts?
Mostly yes, with caveats. For mechanical wear items — water pumps, thermostats, suspension arms, brake parts, clutches, alternators, starters — we deal in tier-1 Chinese OE-equivalent brands that are often the same factory that supplied GWM in the first place. For electrical sensors and ECU-related parts we strongly recommend OE-equivalent quality rather than the cheapest generic option, because cheap MAF sensors and crank sensors throw fault codes inside 6 months. We will tell you upfront where we recommend spending up and where the budget option is fine.
Can you supply a used complete 1.5T engine for an H2?
Yes, depending on availability. We work with accident-damage yards and we typically have 1-3 used GW4G15B engines moving through stock at any time. Prices range R18,000 to R28,000 for the bare engine with intake, exhaust manifold and turbo, depending on recorded mileage and a compression test result. We supply with a basic 30-day fitment warranty against major mechanical failure — full terms are quoted in writing on the invoice before payment.
My H2 has a P0299 code — does that automatically mean a new turbo?
No. P0299 is an underboost code and the most common cause on this engine is the electric wastegate actuator sticking, not the turbo itself. Get the actuator function-tested first. If the actuator is the fault, replacement is R2,800-R3,600 versus R7,500+ for a turbo. Other causes worth checking before condemning the turbo: split intercooler hose, faulty MAP sensor, or a vacuum leak on the intake side. Your workshop should diagnose the root cause before ordering the replacement part.
Do you fit the parts or just supply them?
Supply only. We are an aftermarket parts trader, not a workshop. We can recommend independent workshops in the Johannesburg area that have worked on H2s before — particularly for timing kit replacement and turbo work where experience matters — but the fitment relationship is between you and the workshop. Parts warranties cover the part only; fitment labour is not covered by us.
What information do you need from me to quote accurately?
VIN (17 characters from the windscreen or the door pillar sticker), engine number if you have it, year of registration, transmission type (manual or 6AT), and a short description or photo of the part you need. For diagnostic-driven parts (sensors, ignition coils, turbo components) please include the fault code your scanner pulled. Sending all of this upfront avoids the back-and-forth and gets you a firm quote inside the same working day.
