Yes, it's real and well-documented. The L15B7 1.5 i-VTEC Ballade and Civic CVT can develop a low-speed shudder or judder under light throttle — often traced to degraded CVT fluid, a failing torque-converter lock-up clutch or worn pulley belt. Step one is always a proper CVT fluid flush with genuine Honda CVT-F (around R600-R900 for the fluid alone) and a software update where applicable. If shudder persists after a clean flush, the next step is a valve body or solenoid kit at R4,500-R7,500 aftermarket, and in the worst cases a full CVT rebuild or replacement which can run R28,000-R55,000 depending on parts route and labour. Catch it early — a fluid service at 60,000-80,000 km is the cheapest insurance.

It depends on the year, the mileage and how the gearbox failed. On 2008-2014 GE Jazz and 2015-on GK Jazz, total CVT failure usually shows as judder, slipping, loss of drive or a stored P-code. A rebuild by a CVT specialist with new pulleys, belt, valve body and torque converter is typically R28,000-R45,000 in parts and labour and works well if the case is undamaged. A good tested used CVT from a low-mileage donor (we source these through SA breakers) lands around R18,000-R32,000 plus fitment, with a short warranty. A new OEM Jazz CVT is rarely the right answer at SA pricing once import costs are added. We'll quote all three options when they're available so you can weigh cost against expected life.
