Park on cardboard overnight for three nights and check for drips — if the cardboard stays clean the loss is internal. Then run a controlled top-up test: fill to the upper mark on the dipstick cold, drive a known 1,000 km, then check cold the next morning. Loss under 0.3L per 1,000 km is normal for the L15B7. Loss between 0.3L and 0.5L per 1,000 km is borderline — switch to 5W-40 and retest. Loss above 0.5L per 1,000 km is the Earth Dreams piston-ring fault and needs a workshop call. Under 100,000 km on the car with mild shudder only: try the fluid service first (R1,800-R2,800). If the shudder survives, rebuild at R18,000-R32,000 makes sense because the rest of the car has life in it. Past 150,000 km, a used donor CVT at R28,000-R55,000 fitted is usually the better number — Honda CVT rebuild parts are scarce in SA, rebuild warranties are short (3-6 months), and a low-mileage donor unit comes with documented kilometres. We supply used CVTs with a 3-month warranty against internal failure; the workshop fitting the unit must do a full fluid fill and TCM relearn before handover.

Genuine Honda CVT-F (Honda CVT Fluid), part number 08200-9006. Do not substitute Dexron, generic ATF, or a "universal CVT fluid" from a parts shop — the friction modifiers are wrong and the steel push-belt and pulley faces wear through inside 5,000 km. A fluid mistake on this transmission turns a R2,500 service into a R45,000 replacement. Genuine Honda CVT-F runs roughly R420-R580 per litre and the gearbox holds about 3.5 litres on a drain-and-fill (closer to 6 litres on a full flush). Workshops without dedicated Honda fluid in stock should be turned away.

Past 100,000 km without a documented CVT fluid service in the last 40,000 km, assume the transmission is borrowed time — discount R20,000-R40,000 off the asking price to cover the rebuild or used-unit swap. Past 120,000 km on the L15B7 without an oil-consumption test, ask the seller to top up the dipstick to maximum and drive it for a week, then recheck — anything below mid-stick is a piston ring conversation worth R15,000-R25,000 to fix or R22,000-R38,000 for a used engine. The thermostat housing, throttle body, ignition coils, and AC clutch are all cheap relative to those two. The engine and the gearbox decide the deal on this car.

Any competent independent can do a drain-and-fill provided they use genuine Honda CVT-F and the correct fill procedure — the Ballade CVT must be filled to a hot-fluid temperature window (around 70-80 degrees C) with a scan tool reading transmission temperature live. Cold-filling to the dipstick mark overfills the gearbox and causes foaming. Honda dealers do this as a standard service for R2,200-R3,200. An independent with a scan tool that reads Honda TCM data does the same job for R1,800-R2,800. A workshop that wants to fill it cold without a scan tool should be declined.
