Mazda CX-3 Parts — Common Faults & SA Pricing
The Mazda CX-3 sold in South Africa from 2015 to roughly 2022 is built around the SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol four (engine code PE-VPS, often shortened to P5) paired with a 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic or 6-speed manual. The high 13:1 compression ratio is what gives the CX-3 its respectable economy figures, but it also means the engine is fussy about coil and spark plug condition once mileage climbs past 80,000 km. We supply aftermarket coils from R380 to R650 each and NGK iridium plugs around R180 each. Front-wheel drive only on the SA-spec models — there was no AWD variant brought in officially, which simplifies driveline parts hunting compared to CX-5.
We are an aftermarket parts supplier in Johannesburg — not an authorised Mazda dealer and not a workshop. We source second-hand original Mazda parts from stripped vehicles and good-quality aftermarket equivalents (brakes, filters, suspension bushes, AC components, radiators, coils) from our trade network. We sell the part, you fit it or your own mechanic fits it. Common requests on the CX-3 are front brake pads (the squeal issue is well documented), AC condensers (the grille opening is wide and stones get through), water pumps, ignition coils, and lower control arm bushes that suffer on Johannesburg's pothole-heavy roads. Quote turnaround is usually same-day if we have the part on the shelf.
Front brake squeal — the classic CX-3 complaint
Front brake squeal on the CX-3 is one of the most-reported Mazda complaints worldwide and it shows up on local cars too — usually a high-pitched whine at low speed when the brakes are cold, sometimes a grinding-style noise once the pads are half worn. The OE semi-metallic pad compound is the culprit. The fix that actually works is swapping to a ceramic or low-metallic aftermarket pad compound — quieter, less dust, and no loss of stopping power for a road-driven CX-3. We supply aftermarket front pad sets from R450 to R750 depending on brand (Ferodo, TRW, Bosch ceramic variants). New OE-spec front discs if needed run around R850 to R1,400 a pair. Often it is just the pads that need swapping if the discs still have meat on them.
AC condenser damage from stone strikes
The CX-3's front grille mesh is wide-opening and the condenser sits right behind it with very little protection. Highway driving on the N1, N3 or N12 around Joburg picks up stones off truck tyres and they punch straight into the condenser fins and tubing. You'll notice the AC blowing warm after a regas, or oily refrigerant residue visible from underneath. A replacement aftermarket condenser is R1,800 to R2,800 depending on stock. We strongly recommend fitting a mesh stone guard behind the grille at the same time — the fine aluminium mesh inserts run R150 to R250 and dramatically extend condenser life. Regas cost is on top, charged by your AC technician.
Water pump weep and thermostat housing leaks
The SkyActiv-G water pump on the CX-3 generally lasts well but starts weeping coolant from the weep hole around 120,000-150,000 km. You'll see pink residue on the timing cover area or smell coolant after a long drive. Aftermarket water pumps for the P5 engine are R650 to R1,200. The plastic thermostat housing is the other coolant leak point — it cracks at the hose neck with age and heat cycling. Aftermarket thermostat housings with thermostat and seals included run R450 to R750. We always advise replacing the coolant cap and doing a pressure test at the same time — the cap itself is around R120 and a weak cap will keep stressing the housing.
Ignition coil failure and rough idle
Misfire codes (P0301 through P0304) and a rough idle on the CX-3 almost always trace back to a tired ignition coil rather than a deeper fuel-system problem. The high-compression SkyActiv engine is unforgiving on weak coils. Symptoms include hesitation under load, a flashing engine light during acceleration, and a noticeable judder at idle. Aftermarket coils are R380 to R650 each — most customers replace the failed coil first and then do the other three as a preventative job over the next few months. NGK iridium spark plugs (R180 each) should be replaced at the same time as the coils — running new coils onto worn plugs will burn the new coils prematurely.
Lower control arm bushes — Joburg pothole damage
The front lower control arm bushes on the CX-3 wear faster on South African roads than the Mazda service schedule suggests. Symptoms are a clunk over speed bumps, vague steering on-centre, and uneven inner-edge tyre wear on the front tyres. The rear bush on each lower arm is the one that typically fails first. We can supply just the bushes (R280 to R450 each side for aftermarket polyurethane or rubber) but most workshops prefer to swap the complete lower arm with bushes pre-fitted — aftermarket complete arms are R950 to R1,650 each. Wheel alignment after fitment is non-negotiable, budget another R350 to R500 for that at your alignment shop.
Mazda CX-3 — Frequently Asked Questions
My CX-3 front brakes squeal badly — what pad should I fit to stop it?
Switch from the OE semi-metallic compound to a ceramic or low-metallic aftermarket pad set. Ferodo, TRW and Bosch all do ceramic-compound CX-3 fronts in the R450 to R750 range. Ceramic pads run quieter, produce less black wheel dust, and have plenty of stopping power for a road-driven SUV. Have your workshop machine the discs lightly or replace them if they are scored — fitting new pads onto glazed discs will just bring the noise straight back.
How do I stop stones from wrecking the CX-3 AC condenser?
Fit a fine aluminium mesh stone guard behind the front grille. The CX-3 grille has wide openings and the condenser sits directly behind with no factory protection — highway driving on the N3 or N1 puts stones straight through it. Mesh inserts run R150 to R250 and take a workshop about thirty minutes to fit. If the condenser is already leaking you'll need a replacement (R1,800 to R2,800 aftermarket) plus a regas — fit the mesh at the same time so you don't repeat the job.
What is the timing chain interval on the CX-3 SkyActiv engine?
The SkyActiv-G 2.0 P5 in the CX-3 uses a maintenance-free timing chain, not a belt — Mazda does not specify a replacement interval. In practice the chain lasts the life of the engine if the oil is changed on schedule (every 10,000 km or 12 months on full synthetic 0W-20). If you hear a rattle on cold start that fades after a few seconds, that is the chain tensioner not the chain itself — tensioners are around R850 aftermarket. We rarely sell timing chain kits for the CX-3 because they almost never need them.
Are you an authorised Mazda dealer? Can you fit the parts for me?
No on both counts. We are an aftermarket parts supplier in Johannesburg, not a Mazda dealership and not a workshop. We source second-hand original Mazda parts from stripped vehicles plus quality aftermarket equivalents from our trade network, and we sell them over the counter or courier nationwide. Fitment is done by your own mechanic or workshop. We're happy to chat through what the part is and how it fits, but the actual labour is not something we offer.
Do you stock CX-3 parts for the diesel models?
No diesel CX-3 was sold in South Africa officially — the local range was petrol-only with the 2.0 SkyActiv-G P5 engine. If you have a grey-import diesel CX-3 (rare) we can sometimes source service items like filters and brake pads which cross over with petrol-spec, but engine-specific parts for the SkyActiv-D diesel are not something we stock or can reliably source locally.
My CX-3 has a misfire and rough idle — coils or plugs first?
On the SkyActiv-G P5 it is almost always a tired ignition coil rather than plugs alone. Have the workshop scan it — codes P0301 to P0304 will tell you which cylinder. Replace the failed coil (R380 to R650 aftermarket) and the spark plug on that cylinder (NGK iridium around R180). If the other plugs are over 60,000 km old do all four at once, otherwise the new coil will wear faster pushing spark through tired plugs. Don't go cheap on the plugs — aftermarket no-name plugs cause repeat misfires.
