Mitsubishi Pajero Parts — Common Faults & SA Pricing
The Mitsubishi Pajero is the proper full-size 4x4 — ladder-chassis, low-range transfer case, Super Select 4WD on the later generations — and the units still on Jo'burg roads are mostly the NS through NX generations (Gen 4, 2006-2021 locally). The two engines we see daily are the 4M41 3.2 DI-D turbo diesel (125kW/381Nm, common-rail injection from 2007 onwards) and the 6G75 3.8-litre V6 petrol (184kW/329Nm), both running 5-speed INVECS-II automatics on most ZA-spec units. Body styles split between the 3-door SWB (rare) and the 5-door LWB (volume). This is an adventure-grade vehicle — most stock has crossed the Botswana border at least once, towed a caravan to the Wild Coast, or seen a corrugated Karoo gravel road in anger. We're an aftermarket parts supplier — not authorised Mitsubishi dealer, not a workshop — so what follows is the wear-pattern reality of a 4x4 that's been used as designed.
Parts supply for the Pajero in 2026 is reasonable on mechanical wear items and weak on body / trim / electronics. The 4M41 diesel injectors, EGR coolers, glow plugs, turbo actuators, oil pumps, and fuel filters all have credible aftermarket equivalents through the main SA channels. The 6G75 petrol is older-school port-injected V6 — coils, plugs, MAF sensors and timing belts are off-the-shelf. Drivetrain (front and rear diff bearings, propshaft UJs, transfer case input/output seals, CV joints) is well covered. Where the picture gets ugly is Super Select 4WD transfer case electronics, the dash cluster, the climate control panel, and any panel specific to the GLS Exceed trim — those go salvage or genuine, and genuine on a 15-year-old Pajero is brutal. We stock what walks out the door weekly; for everything else we route to the salvage network and we tell you upfront. Phone or WhatsApp the VIN and we'll quote straight on stock and timeline.
4M41 3.2 DI-D common-rail injector failure
The 4M41 injector is the single biggest scheduled-failure item on the diesel Pajero — they typically start playing up between 180,000-260,000km, earlier on units run on dirty diesel or stretched fuel-filter intervals. Symptoms: rough idle, white smoke on cold start, knock under load, P0201-P0204 codes, eventual no-start. Reconditioned aftermarket injectors run R4,200-R6,200 each with new tips and seal kit, and you replace as a set of four — never one or two, the rail won't balance. Set of four reconditioned lands at R16,800-R24,800. New genuine Denso is R11,000-R14,500 each (R44,000+ for the set), which is why nobody does new. Always replace the leak-off pipes (R280-R450) and fuel filter at the same time. Workshop will need to code the new injector codes via MUT-III or aftermarket equivalent.
EGR cooler clogging and DPF management on the 4M41
The 4M41 EGR cooler chokes with soot and coked oil from 140,000km, faster on short-trip duty cycles. Symptoms: limp mode, P0401/P0402, rough idle, black smoke under load, coolant loss on the worse cases (cracked cooler core leaking into the inlet). Aftermarket EGR cooler is R3,400-R5,200; EGR valve assembly R2,100-R3,200. DPF (where fitted on later NX units) is R12,000-R18,500 aftermarket or R28,000+ genuine — most owners run a professional clean and recoat (R2,200-R3,400) at a DPF specialist before swapping the full canister. EGR delete blanking plates exist at R400-R900 — legally grey, requires remap to disable the regen logic, and we'll quote on the part but the fitment and tune are the workshop's call. We don't tune.
Super Select 4WD transfer case actuator and shift motor failure
The Super Select II transfer case uses an electric shift actuator (motor + position sensor) on the case to swap between 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc. The actuator fails from 150,000km — symptoms are the 4WD light flashing on the dash, refusal to shift out of the selected range, or stuck in 4H. The shift motor assembly is R4,800-R7,500 aftermarket / used-good, R12,000+ genuine. The position sensor on its own (if that's the failed part) is R1,400-R2,200. Diagnosis matters here — workshops sometimes throw the whole actuator at it when it's actually a wiring loom corrosion issue at the connector under the case (R0 fix, just clean the pins). We stock the actuator and the sensor separately; we don't stock the transfer case itself — that's a salvage item.
Ladder-chassis body mount bushes and suspension upper arm bushes
The Pajero is monocoque-on-ladder (ladder chassis with a body bolted to it through rubber body mount bushes). The body mounts perish from 120,000km, faster on vehicles that see corrugations regularly. Symptoms: clunking over speed bumps, body moving relative to chassis on hard cornering, panel gaps shifting. Full set of body mount bushes (8 mounts) runs R1,800-R3,200 aftermarket polyurethane (better for off-road than OE rubber), R2,400-R4,200 for OE-spec rubber. Suspension upper control arm bushes go around the same time — R380-R650 per bush, R1,400-R2,400 for the full arm with bushes pressed in. We stock both. Job is workshop hours — budget a full day if you're doing body mounts and upper arms together.
Rear leaf-pack / coil-spring fatigue on heavily-loaded Pajeros
LWB Pajeros that have spent their life with a roof tent, drawer system, long-range tank and a caravan on the back sag at the rear from 150,000km. Most ZA-spec Gen 4 Pajeros run rear coils with multi-link (not leaves — the leaf comment is a misread on some forums), and the coils fatigue and the upper shock mounts crack. Standard-rate aftermarket coil pair is R1,800-R3,200; heavy-duty / raised coils (Old Man Emu spec equivalent) R3,400-R5,800 the pair. Rear shocks R780-R1,600 each standard, R1,400-R2,800 for heavy-duty gas. Upper shock mount with bush R420-R780 each side. If the vehicle is going back out as a touring 4x4, do the heavy-duty kit — the standard coils will sag again inside 80,000km on a loaded vehicle.
Mitsubishi Pajero — Frequently Asked Questions
Do you stock aftermarket injectors for the Pajero 4M41 3.2 DI-D?
Yes — reconditioned aftermarket injectors at R4,200-R6,200 each, supplied as a set of four (R16,800-R24,800 the set). New genuine Denso is roughly 2.5x that. Always replace leak-off pipes and fuel filter with them. Workshop will need to code the new injector calibration codes via MUT-III or aftermarket diagnostic.
My Super Select 4WD light is flashing — can you supply the transfer case actuator?
Yes — the electric shift actuator runs R4,800-R7,500 aftermarket or used-good, and the position sensor on its own is R1,400-R2,200. Before you buy anything, ask the workshop to check the connector under the transfer case for corrosion — it's often a free fix. We don't stock the transfer case itself; that's a salvage item we route out.
Do you have parts for the 6G75 3.8 V6 petrol Pajero?
Yes — coil packs, spark plugs, MAF sensors, ignition leads, timing belt kits, water pumps, alternators and starters are all standard aftermarket lines. The 6G75 is a port-injected V6 so service parts are well covered. WhatsApp the VIN and we'll confirm which exact spec your unit runs.
Are body panels for the Pajero LWB available aftermarket?
Mixed picture. Front fender, bonnet, grille and front bumper skin we can usually source aftermarket or salvage within a week. Tailgate, rear quarter panels and Exceed-trim specific bits often go genuine or salvage only — Pajero is a 15-20 year old design now and aftermarket panel manufacturers don't all keep tooling. Send a photo of the panel and the VIN.
I tow a caravan and my Pajero sags at the rear — what suspension do you stock?
Standard-rate aftermarket rear coils run R1,800-R3,200 the pair, heavy-duty raised coils R3,400-R5,800 the pair. Rear shocks R780-R2,800 each depending on standard vs heavy-duty gas. If the vehicle is staying loaded, do the heavy-duty kit — standard coils will sag again inside 80,000km on a touring setup.
Can you supply the dash cluster, climate panel or other Pajero electronics?
Honestly, mostly no. Dash cluster, climate control head, ETACS / BCM and infotainment are salvage-only on the Pajero — we route those enquiries to our salvage network rather than pretend to stock them. If the salvage route comes up empty we'll tell you upfront so you can budget for genuine or import.
