The Omoda C5 landed in South Africa in 2023 as Chery's premium-styled crossover sibling, riding on the same T1X platform as the Tiggo 7/8 and powered by the 1.5T SQRE4T15C turbo-petrol four paired with a 7-speed dry dual-clutch (7DCT). It sells on its sharp styling, big infotainment screen and competitive price against the Hyundai Creta, Haval Jolion and VW T-Cross. Mechanically it is Chery DNA underneath the Omoda badge, which is good news for parts supply because most engine and driveline components cross-reference back to Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 4 Pro stock that has been in the Johannesburg aftermarket channel for a few years already.
From a parts-trader view the C5 is still a young model, so the aftermarket is catching up unevenly. Service items (oil filters, air filters, brake pads, water pumps, intercooler hoses, clutch kits for the 7DCT) are now landing through the Chinese-origin aftermarket pipeline at sensible ZAR pricing. Electronic modules, infotainment units, ADAS cameras and body trim are still mostly OE-only or grey-import, so we stock used and refurbished where we can find them. 7DCT dry dual-clutch shudder and judder
The Getrag-derived 7-speed dry dual-clutch (7DCT) on the 1.5T C5 is the single biggest fault we get phoned about. Owners report shudder pulling away from a stop, especially uphill in traffic, and a jerky 1-2 upshift once the clutch packs start glazing. Software resets buy time, but once the friction material is worn the only real fix is a clutch kit replacement. Aftermarket dry-DCT clutch kits (clutch discs, pressure plates, release bearings) land between R8,500 and R12,000 depending on whether you want a Chinese-origin OE-equivalent or a branded LuK/Sachs-pattern kit. Add labour at a transmission specialist — this is not a home-garage job.
Water pump weeping at the timing cover
The SQRE4T15C 1.5T uses a belt-driven water pump that starts seeping coolant from the weep hole around 60,000-80,000 km. First symptom is a sweet smell after a hot run and a slow drop on the expansion bottle. Catch it early — a failed pump on this engine can take the auxiliary belt and timing alignment with it. Aftermarket water pumps for the Chery 1.5T platform run R850 to R1,400 depending on brand and whether the housing is included. We carry the housing-style replacement which is what most fitters prefer because the gasket surface is cleaner. Replace the thermostat at the same time while the system is open.
Intercooler hose split at silicone-to-plastic join
The lower intercooler-to-throttle-body hose on the 1.5T has a silicone elbow crimped onto a plastic quick-connect. Heat cycles eventually crack the silicone right at the join and you get a sudden boost leak — engine light, limp mode, hissing under acceleration. It is a known weak point across the whole Chery 1.5T family, not just C5. Aftermarket replacement hoses land between R450 and R900. Some workshops convert to a full silicone hose with a stainless clamp at that join, which lasts longer than the original crimped setup. Quick fix, but only worth doing with a genuine part — generic universal hoses do not seal the plastic connector properly.
Brake squeal and front pad glazing
OE front brake pads on the C5 are a soft low-dust compound that glazes early in stop-start Joburg traffic. The squeal usually starts around 25,000-35,000 km and the cure is a pad swap, not just a clean-up. Aftermarket semi-metallic pads in the same fitment run R450 to R850 a set and most fitters report the squeal goes away and pedal feel improves. If the discs are scored or below minimum thickness, replace those too — aftermarket front discs are R650 to R1,100 each. We do not sell ceramic pads in this fitment yet; the aftermarket has not landed them in volume.
Infotainment freezing and washer pump failure
Two nagging electrical complaints come up repeatedly. The 10.25-inch infotainment head unit freezes or reboots, usually after a phone pairs over Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay tries to load at the same time. A software update from Omoda SA fixes most cases, but if the unit is properly dead a refurbished swap-out from a wreck is the realistic route — new units are dealer-only and dear. The other one is the front washer pump — a R280 to R450 aftermarket part that fails when owners run the reservoir dry. Both are quick swaps, but you need to know which one you are dealing with before you spend money on the wrong fix.
